The 70s were the worst time to go to Art School. Abstract was king and I fled from loathsome splotches into Photography as fast as possible. I still hate Colin McCahon which could get you shot for treason in New Zealand.

Requiem is a portrait of Siobhan Mary. I grieved her loss after her father took her to live in another country.

The Summer I Turned 50 was my birthday present to myself. I knew my late husband, artist Ron Monten, couldn't afford to buy me anything so I asked him to take my picture to commemorate my half century. Mind you, my birthday's in August and I waited until summer to wade into the water.

I found The Lonely Bull - just as he is - in a roadside paddock at Tapuwera. He's a chainsaw staue sawn from a tree stumpin case you hadn't guessed. I simply hand-coloured the grass round his magnificent self.

Am I is a portrait of my daughter Siobhan Mary O'Brien in a reflective mood - actually shot by candlelight.
